2nd May 2011 CONSIDERED RESPONSE
OK it appears that some (anonymous) feels that I should in fact respond to the comments by Stan(see comments under my blog on 30th April) in spite of the obvious childishness and malicious intent contained in this, the only direct posting by him since the inception of the blog about 8months ago.
This,in spite of repeated requests during the first half of the trip to place his feelings on record.
Up till now I had been "walking on eggshells" in everything I have published for fear of immediate censorship & deletion thereof, which has a occurred a number of times in the past when I have attempted to "justify " my actions or text on the blog.
I have a feeling that the anonymous person requesting this response is the "administrator of the blog.If not I apologize for the assumption.
if it is then hopefully this response will not be summarily deleted. If not ,who knows?
Let me begin by explaining that ,throughout this trip I have attempted to simply relate the experiences of the group in as true, entertaining and realistic a way as possible.
Since the split from the group I had attempted be even more careful w.r.t any mention of the rest of the group ,mainly due to the fact that I had been requested (a long time ago) to not ever mention a certain member of the group since the "smelly bikers" comment.(I have it on e mail)
Even in this instance I tried on the blog to explain that this was an attempt at humor and a general one made when, for the first time in 2 months,I was in a room by myself as a result of being abandoned by the group with an overheated bike outside of Lima.
The explanation was that the group had waited for 40 minutes before deciding to continue into the huge city of Lima.I had no form of communication at the time.
The last blog by Lindsay makes absolutely no sense to me and I have no idea of which blog he is referring to and where it contains any inflammatory text of any kind.As mentioned I have attempted ,not only to never mention the rest of the members of the group but never to blog anything that might in anyway be considered insulting .His problem seems to relate simply to the fact that I never referred to him by name in the unnamed recent blog?
Stan's comment seems to be as a result of both this "issue" and the fact that I spoke about the "other two" who had already shipped their bikes back to SA .He seemed most concerned that I had not mentioned them by their given names?
This particular post was in response to a direct question to one of my blogs by a good friend ,where he had mentioned their names and asked about their undocumented,"mystery disappearance", and I was merely responding with an answer. It required no name content and was not published on the main blog but was in direct response under comments
Secondly ,I might just mention that although Lindsay was the originator of this trip (I responded to an Internet request for interested parties to take part in this journey),he was certainly not the sole orchestrator as I had multiple meetings with the shipping agents (they're located 500m from my home)as well as months of liaison regarding visa requirements etc.(particularly w.r.t Panama).
Stan simply rocked up at my place ,spent the night, and rode the 500m to the shipping agents ,where he rode his bike into the container ,helped strap it down ,and then went home to Plett after I'd taken him to a motorcycle accessory shop to purchase a pair of waterproof gloves.
Thirdly,w.r.t his malicious comment regarding the question of what I was doing on the blog still I would comment as follows:
-The intent of the blog in the first place is very obvious and specific and is contained under the heading of the blog.It relates to the fact that it was set up expressly to relate the experiences of the 4 members of the group in their trip through the Americas over a period of 3 months.I am one of those 4 members and am still here relating my experiences.
I have attempted in the past to explain the fact that, had I known that it "belonged"to any individual, I would certainly have immediately set up my own.
By the way,the fact that any split should change those facts was never in question as there was always going to be such a split at some point.(I have no Canadian visa and never had any intention to reach Alaska. This was common knowledge). The others are no longer there as planned but,I assume, are still free to blog.
-For the first 7months ,and over two months of the trip I was the ONLY contributor of any text regarding our experiences en route. This in spite of repeated requests to the other members to contribute their feelings in some way.
it seems inexplicable that Stan would expect me to stop blogging for the simple reason that I am no longer in favor with him.
-His last remark was obviously intended to be "funny".Well the only descriptions I can conjure are: childish, puerile, pathetic.
The person who requested this response from me made some comment in response to my wife's response to a previous comment, that "any attempt to denigrate any of the riders will not be tolerated and had come full circle".(Once again I apologize if it is not the person I think it is)
Cheryl was in fact responding to a previous extremely derogatory comment from someone with an Italian sounding name, where he referred to me as an ill mannered person who obviously would never learn any manners in the future.
I have no idea who this person is but he has never met me and has no right to judge in that way.Is this not another derogatory comment?I believe I am a rider (one of the two still riding)
I would suggest from my response above that in fact:
-I have NEVER made any insulting or derogatory comments re the other members
-That double standards are obviously being applied in an attempt to find ANY excuse to block any further posts by myself in the future!
In fact I had ,over the last few days of riding had thoughts regarding the fact that,at last,it seemed that I would be left alone, without any form of animosity or censorship,to relate my remaining experiences on this ,the vehicle set up to do so a year ago.
Unfortunately this is obviously not the case.
If the person who requested this response (which I had no intention of making) is in fact the person I have mentioned above i trust that he/she is happier now that the response has been forthcoming and will allow it to remain for the edification of all of the followers of this blog.
It's a great pity that this wonderful journey had to get to this.

Hi Tony. Wow A hellva a journey for you recently - all this snow and ice not for the faint hearted - more power to you.
Keep the adventure going. Apologies for the break in my adding comments. My dear old Dad has been ill and this has caused me to spend some time in North Wales (with no wifi!)
Take care and c/mon the Stormers!
Shame on them and well done. You have a great sense of humour and a wonderful syle of writing.; Have really enjoyed all of your blogs and hope to stay glued to the end of your wonderful adventure.
TOM
You're damned if you do and you're damned if you don't. Can see this was the toughest part on your very exciting trip and am thrilled that you are enjoying this dream in spite of...
Love you and see you soon

administrator you called for a comment so if you do delete it which i am sure you will do you are being a hypocryt. i cant believe that so long after the split these negative comments are continuing from your past group. what a big childish shame! negativity breeds negativity which it seems is still brewing from their side.
and stan.....if you are so sensitive to people not being called by their names and insinuations...whats the woodstock hippy about....... v hypocrytical too! he seems like a stand up guy to me :-)
My goodness what a serious bunch of guys you were saddled with. Never read any humour in their blogs but some of your previous blogs have been classics. My favourite was the one where you were teaching kids to behave in the Peru section.
I only hope you will be able to keep your contibutions to the blog somehow, such a pity.
Kay
Hey Tony
Chin up. You are doing great. This trip has been your dream and you were very much part of the planning. You can be very proud of all that you have achieved. I don't know what I am going to do when you get back. I now find myself getting up earlier just so I can check out the blog before sunrise. How wierd is that??? Oh by the way, Marc has been following your blog too. Now for the news: John Smit has been made SA Rugby Captain (thought that was always the case!), Osama Bin Laden has been killed (sorry, you probably knew that before I did, being in USA), Jake White contracted to Brumbies for 4 years. I am getting good hey? AND I STILL LOVE THE SHARKS!!!!!!!!! Min dae to Cheryl joining you. Love Sheila
Hi Tony
What a durr bunch of people you were with thay seem to have
a strange approach to lifes realities.
Well certainly a diminished sense of humour.
you carry on as normal and enjoy the rest
of your tripp ,see you on your return Vic.
Tony this stems from a post you made....

If you have travelled so far with three other guys it just seems strange that the manner in which everybody addressed is sometimes so impersonal and not everybody likes or understand this.
Personally if I travelled with someone regardless how long or whether I like them or not, would at least make an effort to address them to their name/s when talking to or about them.
Each to their own in the end.
Dirk
Hi Tony, wow! In experiencing Buffalo, Springbok Rallies since 1973, and many other smaller outrides in SA along the lines of your 'epic' (incl Marco on occasion), I've never seen such limited drivel, admittedly from only a couple of 'super sensitives'. Holy Gods, get the monkey off your back Stan or 'ridealoni';I'm glad I was instrumental in getting the response out there as it shows who not to ride with.
Now forget the easily forgettable;you and Lindsay are jointly the 'winners' so enjoy the ride you lucky buggers and ignore the silly snide stuff.
Wish I was there.........even on a GS!
Cheers guys,John vd S
I think the comments are even better than the blog. Now this is for Dirk and all others who think my husband is in the wrong, as the person in question has not had the decency to admit that this was his instruction and I am going to give you a word for word extract from his communication ie from the horse's mouth as they say -
"Well I gave you where we are, its on the route north no turn off. After our talk yesterday i asked not to be mention me again on the blog personally so you again you made me out to be "Glummer as normal". The rule of riding in a group is the person at the back to keep up."
This is word for word and Tony was doing as asked and not mentioning names.
John maybe you would like to advise what the rule of riding in a group is seeing that you are Chairman of Nomads.
Cheryl
Cheryl I think you misunderstood my comment completely. I gave my "viewpoint" of why I think things are partly the way they are and honestly could not care less whether Tony is right or wrong. He is old enough to look after himself. Hence my qoute - each to their own.
Use it or don't, it is not a personal attack.
Thank you Dirk. Its just I am fed up with the untruths. Tony was asked not to mention names and he didn't and I think that needed to be aired. Also I see Lindsay once again has said that Tony left the group. They rode off and it just happened to be once too many times and Tony didn't jump on his bike and chase after them. He sat down and had lunch.
Now if the Administrator had not insisted on a response non of this would be happening.
Cheryl
Hey John,
I'm off to the Denver BMW dealer who is also the Triumph dealer.
Might just find another bike in the container home?
800 OFFROAD?
"-I have NEVER made any insulting or derogatory comments re the other members"
OK, then maybe explain your reference to Stan looking like a Panamanian Pimp.
Please.
The reference to Stan as a Panamanian pimp was one coined by the other members of the group in jest and used constantly by them as a joke which seemed absolutely OK with him.
Unfortunately however one would first require a sense of humour in order to appreciate this.
Blah, blah, blah - get a grip ALL of you!
And stay safe.
Jeni
And to all our charming negative contributors out there, just remember
"Always look on the bright side of life, de dum de dum de dum...
Altogether now
